Ja, Robbe & Berking bietet Pflegemittel an, die ideal für die Reinigung und Pflege von Silberbesteck geeignet sind. Unsere Pflegeprodukte finden Sie here.

Silver cutlery is often regarded as particularly delicate – yet it is essentially just ordinary cutlery that can be used without any problems in everyday life. The widespread misconception that silver needs to be polished constantly persists. In reality, daily use is actually the best protection against tarnishing: natural skin oils form a protective layer and slow down the formation of silver sulphide – the substance responsible for the discolouration. To clean the cutlery, simply rinse it with warm water after a meal and dry it thoroughly to prevent water marks. More intensive care using special silver cleaners is only necessary if visible signs of tarnish appear – for example, after prolonged storage. So-called home remedies such as aluminium foil and salt are not recommended: they attack not only the dirt but also the silver itself. However, with careful, regular use and a little water, your silver cutlery is very easy to look after in everyday life – beautiful and practical at the same time

Yes, all silver and silver-plated cutlery from Robbe & Berking is generally dishwasher-safe. However, as silver is a natural material, there are a few points to bear in mind to ensure the cutlery is cared for properly and to achieve the best results::

  • Preparation: Rinse off any food residues that are particularly high in protein or acid, such as egg or citrus fruits, before placing the cutlery in the dishwasher. This prevents discolouration and limescale build-up.
  • Dosage: Use only 1/3 to a maximum of 50 per cent of the recommended amount of washing-up liquid, as modern dishwashers often use less water; this means that excessive doses can lead to residues and discolouration.
  • Knives: Place knives with the blades facing downwards to prevent wear and damage.
  • Dishwashing liquid: Use dishwashing liquid, rinse aid and regenerating salt from the same product range, as these are optimally compatible and deliver better results. Avoid aggressive dishwashing liquids, which are often found in ‘2-in-1’ or ‘3-in-1’ tablets, as these contain a high oxygen content that can contribute to staining. We recommend, amongst other products Dishwasher Powder and the Classic Dishwasher Tablets..
  • After washing: Once the wash cycle has finished, open the dishwasher door to allow moisture to escape and prevent salt and acid deposits from forming. Then rub the cutlery dry with a soft cloth to remove any crystalline deposits
  • Please note: Cutlery containing horn, mother-of-pearl or wood is not dishwasher-safe and should be washed by hand.

To clean your silver cutlery, we recommend the Classic range from Claro, an Austrian manufacturer of eco-friendly washing-up liquids. Claro is renowned for its high cleaning performance and specially formulated products that are particularly gentle on silver cutlery.

Among other products, we recommend the Classic dishwasher powder and the Classic dishwasher tablets. One level teaspoon of Classic dishwasher powder or half a Classic dishwasher tablet is sufficient. For best results, use these in combination with the appropriate Claro rinse aid and dishwasher salt.

These products contain a special silver protection formula that ensures your silver cutlery is cleaned gently and effectively.

Materials & Quality

  • Crescent Moon & Crown: These two symbols can be found on all our Sterling silver products.
    • The crescent moon symbolises genuine silver content and has been used as the legal silver hallmark in Germany since 1888.
    • The crown indicates that the silver comes from Germany.
  • Mammoth: The mammoth is the Robbe & Berking logo and appears on silver-plated cutlery used. It stands for the company’s high quality and masterful craftsmanship.
  • 925 silver (sterling silver): Consists of 92.5 per cent pure silver and 7.5 per cent other metals, mostly copper. It is robust and is ideal for cutlery and jewellery.
  • 999 silver (fine silver): Consists of 99.9% pure silver. It is softer and is often used for coins or ingots.

The term refers to an alloy containing 18 per cent chromium and 8 per cent nickel. Stainless steel is rust-resistant, durable and easy to care for, making it an ideal material for cutlery.

  • 90 silver plating: Here, 90 g of silver was applied to 24 pieces of cutlery. This silver plating was standard practice at Robbe & Berking until 1998. Today, however, it is no longer used on cutlery, but is primarily used on tableware and barware. Here, the 90 silver plating remains our standard finish and offers high quality and durability.
With 90 silver plating, an average of around 3.75 g of silver is applied per piece of cutlery. This corresponds to a silver layer of approximately 12 to 15 micrometres.
  • 150 silver plating: Since 1998, Robbe & Berking has relied on this high-quality silver plating process, in which 150 g of silver is applied to 24 pieces of cutlery. It is durable and is used on our cutlery.
With 150 silver plating, an average of around 7.5 g of silver is applied per piece of cutlery. This corresponds to a layer of silver approximately 20 to 25 micrometres thick.

800-part silver plating consists of 80 per cent pure silver and 20 per cent other metals, mostly copper. However, Robbe & Berking no longer uses this alloy and instead opts for 925 sterling silver for its cutlery and silverware.

  • Remove leftover food: If you are washing the cutlery in the dishwasher, make sure that any large bits of food are removed before the wash cycle begins. If the dishwasher is only used occasionally, it is advisable to give the cutlery a quick rinse before washing to prevent any residue that could cause rust.
  • Regular use: As silver and stainless steel do not rust in the same way as ordinary steel blades, it helps to use the cutlery regularly. The more it is used, the less likely it is to rust.

Storage & Repair

The simplest and most effective way to store silver cutlery is to use it regularly. Silver benefits from use — the more often it’s used, the less likely it is to tarnish. We therefore recommend keeping your cutlery in a drawer and using it regularly. If you won’t use it for a long time, we recommend our cutlery bags or protective cloths.

Yes — we offer a repair service exclusively for Robbe & Berking products. A binding cost estimate can only be made after the cutlery has been inspected in our manufactory, as this is the only way to reliably assess its condition and necessary repair work.
